The ARMA Greater Columbus Chapter welcomes Kirk Herath & Darren Shulman.

Every day, government entities and companies face the delicate balance between transparency and privacy. Laws and industry practices are pushing organizations to provide individuals with greater insights into how information about them is being used. But at the same time, when organizations are collecting information, there is a certain expectation of privacy. Can we give this information out? Should we give out this information? How accessible should information be? This debate-style session will address the question, “How do organizations meet growing expectations regarding transparency while also protecting the information entrusted to them?”

Speakers:

Kirk Herath is Vice-President, Associate General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for Nationwide Insurance Companies and affiliates based in Columbus, Ohio.

Kirk’s practice group is responsible for all legal issues impacting privacy, information security, technology and information systems, contracts and supply services management, confidentiality and data integrity. Among other things, Kirk heads up a team that has primary responsibility for corporate privacy policy and implementing privacy across all lines of business.

Currently Kirk is Chairman of the Ohio Attorney General’s Cybersecurity Advisory Board. He is Past President and past member of the board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals and is still very active within the association. He also served on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee from 2005 to 2011. He speaks regularly on a broad array of privacy, security and technology issues.

Darren Shulman is City of Delaware Attorney and oversees the City’s Legal Department, which includes the City Prosecutor’s Office as well as serves as the legal advisor and counsel for all City of Delaware officers and departments in matters relating to their official duties and powers.

His areas of expertise include public records, equal opportunity, procurement, ethics, and contract negotiations. Darren is a prior chair of the Ohio Electronic Records Committee. Darren previously served as an associate legal counsel for the Ohio Department of Administrative Services and prior to that was a Montgomery County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney. He earned his law degree from Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude. His undergraduate studies were at Northwestern University, where he graduated magna cum laude in political science. After Harvard, Shulman worked in Washington, D.C. practicing general litigation and antitrust law at the Crowell and Moring firm.


This is a lunch meeting held from 11:30 am – 2:00 pm at Hofbrauhaus Columbus in Grandview Yard in the Schalander Banquet room.

Each monthly meeting will have the following format:

11:30-11:45 – Networking and Order Lunch
11:45-12:00 – Announcements and “I found it at ARMA” education brief
12:00-12:30 – Lunch and Networking
12:30-2:00 – Monthly Speaker

Registration cost includes lunch
